WASHINGTON, DC, March 18, 2025 ¨C Å·ÃÀÈÕb´óƬ Board of Directors has approved a new project to support the expansion of S?o Paulo¡¯s Metro Line 2 ¨C Green. The project aims to strengthen low-carbon mobility, increase job accessibility, and support social housing in one of Brazil¡¯s most densely populated regions. The $250 million Green and Resilient SP Metro Line 2 Extension project will provide safe, efficient, and sustainable public transport for millions of residents in the S?o Paulo Metropolitan Region (SPMR).
S?o Paulo faces severe congestion and mobility challenges, with a high dependency on private vehicles contributing to air pollution and long commute times. The Line 2 extension, spanning 8.4 kilometers, will improve public transport access for low-income communities, alleviating pressure on overcrowded transit lines and reducing reliance on road transport. The project is expected to significantly enhance connectivity between S?o Paulo¡¯s eastern and western zones, benefiting residents who currently endure long commutes to access jobs and essential services.
"Investing in sustainable mobility is key to reducing inequality and improving quality of life in megacities like S?o Paulo," said Johannes Zutt, World Bank Country Director for Brazil. "This project will enhance access to economic opportunities while promoting low-carbon transport solutions that support climate resilience."

- Sustainable Public Transport: The extension of Line 2 will improve access to metro services for underserved areas, reducing commute times and expanding job opportunities.
- Climate Resilience & Low-Carbon Mobility: Investments in energy-efficient metro systems, including driverless operations and regenerative braking technology, will enhance sustainability and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
- Support for Social Housing: The project will explore a potential PPP to develop social housing near the metro line, providing affordable living options with better transit access.
- Gender & Safety Measures: The initiative will strengthen gender-reporting channels and responsive protocols for sexual harassment in S?o Paulo¡¯s mass transit system.
This financing aligns with S?o Paulo¡¯s Integrated Urban Transport Masterplan (PITU 2040) and the World Bank¡¯s sustainable mobility goals, ensuring long-term environmental and economic benefits.
