Supporting the People of Myanmar

Myanmar faces a complex crisis marked by ongoing armed conflict, economic instability, natural disasters, displacement and a deepening humanitarian emergency. The situation has been exacerbated by the powerful earthquake in March 2025 which devastated large parts of central Myanmar, caused a tragic loss of life and destruction of critical infrastructure in many areas.

In response to the evolving situation, and aligned with the World Bank Group¡¯s Fragility, Conflict and Violence (FCV) Strategy, the World Bank has been supporting the delivery of essential basic services and livelihood assistance for the people of Myanmar. Å·ÃÀÈÕb´óƬ provides support only through third party organizations such as UN agencies and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Å·ÃÀÈÕb´óƬ also delivers knowledge and analytical work to inform decision-making and public understanding of key issues and developments, covering sectors such as agriculture, education, energy, food security, transportation, and the broader economy. Updated reports, survey results, and insights are shared through the World Bank Myanmar Monitoring Platform.

Myanmar Community Support Project (MCSP) | US$22.5 million (Myanmar Partnership Multi-Donor Trust Fund)|Completed

The project aimed to enhance food security and improve livelihoods for vulnerable populations affected by crises in select areas of Myanmar. Approved in April 2023 and completed in September 2024, the project helped enhance food security for 45,200 conflict-affected households and provided nutrition support to 17,000 women, girls and children. In addition, it helped deliver livelihood assistance such as agriculture production and cash transfers to over 217,000 individuals and improved basic services such as water, sanitation, and shelter for almost 283, 000 people.

Implementing Agencies: United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Myanmar Community Livelihood Assistance Project (MCLAP) | US$25 million (Japan Social Development Fund) Approved in April 2025

The project aims to enhance access to emergency assistance, including access to food, basic services and livelihood opportunities in vulnerable areas. Key activities include emergency food assistance and nutrition support; cash-for -assets to rehabilitate community infrastructure; recovery of livelihoods (livestock, fisheries and farming); and recovery of basic services.

Target beneficiaries: 417,200 vulnerable and conflict-affected people and communities affected by the earthquake.

Implementing Agencies: United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Myanmar Strengthening Community Resilience Project (SCORE)| US$ 52.5 million (International Development Association Grant) Approved in May 2025.

The project aims to strengthen community capacity to recover from crisis and prepare for and respond to future shocks. It focuses on building the capacity of communities to restore and provide basic services and sustainable livelihoods.

Target beneficiaries: Over 1 million people from vulnerable communities and marginalized groups, including internally displaced, women-headed households, ethnic minorities and earthquake affected populations.

Implementing Agencies: United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Myanmar Health Assistance and Nutrition Support Project (HANS)| US$40 million (International Development Association Grant) Approved in May 2025.

The project aims to deliver essential health and nutrition services and assistance to vulnerable communities, with focus on women and children affected by the conflict. It supports interventions to address high under-five mortality rates, maternal mortality, and child malnutrition while building the capacity of local health institutions to deliver these critical services.

Target beneficiaries: 770,000 vulnerable populations which includes women, children under five and people affected by natural disasters, specifically the earthquake. 

Implementing Agencies: United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and United Nations Children¡¯s Fund (UNICEF).
